Personally I'm not sure I have enough geek cred to admit to playing a Star Trek game

Who would want to play something like that...

*whistles nervously*

...I've been following the development of this game, and unfortunately it's throwing up some big red flags. Shake-ups at Atari have moved the launch forward dramatically, it's doing 2 months of beta, then launching in Feb. NCSoft is re-using the Champions online engine, so the overall development time for the game is amazingly quick. Something like two years from start to release. The second faction (Klingons) are pvp only. You unlock them after playing your federation character to level 10, then switching sides. They have a limited number of ships available at launch, and the impression folks are getting is that there was supposed to be two entirely fleshed out factions, and instead we're getting 1.5

The good news is leveling via PvP is supposed to be viable, they have "battlegrounds" type offerings as well. PVE leveling takes place in "Episodes" just like tv. It's a giant main quest that you move forward like TV episodes. The landing party Episodic content is supposed to be something like Public Quests from War, where random people doing that same content will join your away team. Or your buddies, or just a bunch of bots from ship.

There's more to it, and under other circumstances I really would like to give it a try, but there are other games that frankly deserve more attention that this.

I'll admit it - I want to hear more about this game. Acorn did raise red flags, though. It seems to me like it's another quick cash grab in a niche market that will fail. That's a snap judgment, though... WAR made me so cynical about MMOs.

This game looks like it'd be a fun borderlands type game (single player with multi-player hot-swappable co-op available) ... not a fun MMO...

Just my 2 cents though. I won't be checking it out, most likely.

WAR made me so cynical about MMOs.
When i was reading about the things they are doing with this WAR was
all I could think about. Pass.

WAR was a failure on multiple fronts, while also succeeding in a few areas. The real loser was Mythic who was handed a pile of Donkey-poo and was subsequently bullied into pushing a poor game onto the market, while EA cut staff and gave them nothing to work with.

The MMO market is a fascinating study in game development. The failure rate is absurd, while the cash potential for a big hit is astronomical. And yet, armed with that knowledge, publishers are still rushing buggy crap out the door months and years too early causing titanic disasters one after the other. I can only assume even in failure these projects are somehow turning a profit, because they insist on repeating the same glaring mistakes.

With this particular project though, they have some excellent things going for them. An experienced and talented company, a big name recognizable IP to work with, and borrow from, and a large dedicated fan base to boot. But some suit is going to fuck it up with a "we can't possibly fail!" attitude, an impossible deadline to meet, and a complete ignorance of the history of the market.

I do like me some Trek, but with Global Agenda, and Mass Effect 2 I have all my bases covered thanks.

I played in beta, it felt like a console game, not like a pc mmo. Character movement was really funky, and attacking was humorous to watch it was that poor. I only played long enough to experience about 20 minutes of play with the ships, and again, very poor control, very slow paced in my opinion.

For true Star Trek fans, I'm sure they'll play it, but as for the quality of a video game, it felt like something that would have been cranked out quickly after a movie release 5-10 years ago.
