A thread to discuss technical issue with the game.
I know so far Josh has been having CTD's, me also although not as bad.
Also, twice my game has just froze up. Can't alt-tab, can't even control-alt-delete. Have to do a hard shutdown and restart pc.
I'm at work so I can't plan. Technically, it's an issue.

I had a few CTD's yesterday... Game just locks up like I'm lagging out or like the server crashes but then everyone else is still able to play. I cant alt-tab, but Ctrl+Alt+Delete lets me open task manager and kill it. Very annoying, and never once happened in beta. It's frustrating.
Getting kicked 15 seconds into almost every game I join is an issue.

My game disconnected every 20-30 minutes, I thought that the issues come from my comp. I'm gonna try turn of my wireless because i always put wireless and Lan on.
If you played the beta, try getting rid of the beta files.

On our servers forums they have this list started:
1. Players being randomly kicked and server crashes
We have seen cases where a server randomly kicks a player for an unknown reason. We have sent logs to EA/Dice to try and find the root cause of the problem. Restarting the server has shown to help
This has been confirmed as a bug that is currently being worked on by EA/Dice. This issue is happening on all Ranked server providers. We we are all hoping to see a fix come in within the next day or two.
2. Configuration editing
There has been reports that the config editors are not properly saving the settings. We have this assigned as a bug and are working towards a resolutions. This is currently affecting a subset of servers.
3. Servers not showing up on the browser
We are getting reports and witnessing issues with servers not showing up in the in-game browser. It seems that the in-game browser is not picking up all of the servers from the master when listing showing the output. Hitting the refresh key will often times display a different set of servers on the list. It appears to be a fix needed to be done by Dice/EA
4. Favorites not working
It does appear that Favorites are not working correctly yet.
5. Higher than normal ping times
The ping times seen on the in-game browser is listing pings higher than what it really is. This is still under investigation.

Multi-Player:
I used someone else's server just to see if it was the same everywhere. I have the video settings at the lowest possible. I can look right, then left, then it freezes and crashes...

Yeah, I was pretty stable on Tuesday and Wednesday (about 1 crash a night) but I started crashing every 30 minutes or so today.
I'm not trying to be a Poopy Peter, but I have yet to Ctd. I'm curious as to what the differences are between my system and others that's leaving me so stable.
I didn't download the beta at all. I wonder if that would have more impact that just un-installing (like left behind registry settings or something.

It is only on the Rush maps. I can play for hours on conquest, but rush ctd's me.
I could not finish a map on the Tribe server playing rush. I went to another server and played conquest the rest of the night, np.
I also played all day and never had an issue except for 1 rush game until I went to the Tribe server where we were playing rush.

I crash equally on both map styles. Awful. I'm going to try non-hardcore mode later and give it a whirl. It's disappointing to have the best round you've had so far and then have it CTD so it doesn't save anything. :(

Most of my issues seem to be graphical. My game seems to lag during any really high particle count situations. I.E. Cannon Fire while a machine gunner, or smoke grenades.
Im at low settings, so im not really sure if I need to upgrade a few pieces here or there or what it is.

I didnt have problem at all yesterday and 2 days ago only a 1-2 crash but today was insane, i crash almost 15 times. I thought the prob was because my comp is overheating. i shut it down for 1 hour and still have the same issues. someone said there was an update earlier today. Maybe its because of the update.

Did you try to:
- Update your graphics drivers (it appears the last Nvidia driver version is bugged)
- Update your DirectX version (there's an bi-monthly update - last version is Feb. 2010. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=0cef8180-e94a-4f56-b157-5ab8109cb4f5)
- Clean your register (http://www.ccleaner.com/download)
- Reduce your graphics options (Try all LOW, NO AA/AF) and see if you get crashes again.
- Try to play with your VSYNC option (graphics options). Put it on ON and OFF.

1. I did update my drivers but the latest drivers they have for my laptop are from last year (around June or so). Dell didn't have those (their latest version of drivers were from 3 years ago). I had to go to the Nvidia site and they haven't been touched in 9 months.
2. I did update the DirectX version just prior to installing BFBC2. Did it again this morning just to make sure.
3. Cleaned the registry when I removed the Beta.
4. I've moved the graphics to every known position and combination of positions including the lowest possible.
5. I tried the VSYNC options as well.
I appreciate the suggestions though, man. It just doesn't like my laptop. I'll be going home tonight so I should hopefully get to try it on my desktop and have better luck (crosses fingers).
Also, other steps:
Killed any services and process that weren't absolutely needed for the laptop to keep chugging along and still play the game.
Updated my chipset. Updated my sound card. Flashed my BIOS. Created a new user on my laptop and installed and tried to play from there.

I'm sure of that, you'll get better luck on your desktop PC. Laptop are pretty capricious(is that the good word?) when it's time to play on it.
About your graphics drivers, I was thinking...did you try to install custom drivers?
- Omega http://www.omegadrivers.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=53&Itemid=53
I was the same problem (old drivers) on one of my laptop and I fixed many of my graphics issues with those Omega drivers.
So uh, can anyone else not connect to our server? I can connect to others with no issue, but my connection times out every time on ours.
I'll check.
I cannot log into it. Connection failed blah blah blah. What I find interesting is who it has listed as on the server currently:

We need to check some issues to connect to our sever.
I think that our sever is limited to 17/32 as i never it see goes up more than that yesterday

Is it possible that it is because of the reserve slot? Too many people at the reserve slot? or the one can't get in because he is in the reserve slot?

.......that is a very, very good question and a bug that I could totally see happening.. I will write down then clear the reserve list when I get home and try to test this out.
I think we have enough people on the reserve list to almost exactly cover that spread.

This messages is to inform you that EA is currently operating a maintenance on their master server, which should help come to terms with the bugs experienced by many. This maintenance is already taking place, and in order to help speed up the process, EA asks to close 40 000 slot to all providers.
If you want to help their technicians out, who have been working day and night since the release of the game, we ask you to consider the option of stopping your servers through your game panel, until the end of the maintenance *.
Note that this is not an obligation, but rather a voluntary hand that you may choose to give. We all hope that this will put an end to the current issues.

Wiped the drive on my desktop that had the Vista x64 OS. Reinstalled Vista x64. Installed all drivers. Installed Steam. Installed BFBC2. Same frakking problem that I had prior to the wipe. The Microsoft C++ 2005 Redistributable fails on install and it says the game is unavailable.
The drive is completely empty of anything except the OS, Steam, BFBC2, and I've downloaded all the newest drivers. I don't know what else to do at this point. I'll have to switch to all Windows 7 soon I suppose. It's more reliable. Next paycheck I'm going to buy the OS and do a total wipe on all drives and start over. It's either that or launch my CPU out the second floor window.

Ok.. after much pulling of the chin hair ('cause I got nothing on top), I decided to try something that by all rights shouldn't have a chance in hell of working. I switched back to the Vista x64 on my Desktop. I tried to launch it. It failed and said game not available. I logged off of steam, logged off of my windows account. Logged into Kelley's window account. Launched steam with my login and it started right up.
Played a round no problems. Logged out of steam and kelleys desktop. Logged back into mine and launched BFBC2 with 0 problems. This was after I did a clean install of Vista.
Does this make any sense to anyone else? Of course, now that I have it fixed, I have to go back out on the road with my laptop that crashes after 5 minutes of gameplay.

Ok, it's a first step. Now, increase step by step and one by one your graphics options.
- Start with Texture and Details to MED. Don't touch HBAO/AA (still on OFF/x1).
- If everything's good, increase them to HIGH (Shadows and Particles still on LOW).
- Then put your Particles on MED, then HIGH.
- Increase your Shadows on MED -----> HIGH
- If everything's stable, enable your HBAO
- Post your report :)

Are you an administrator on your desktop and Kelley a user or power user? If so, have you tried replicating that on your laptop by creating another user with the same privileges as Kelley?
Not sure why/if that would work, but its worth a shot I suppose.

Separate issues. On the desktop, I couldn't get the game to launch because the Visual C++ wouldn't install correctly. This caused it to bail on me before the game ever launched and told me the game was unavailable.
On the laptop, it installed correctly and I can get into the game just fine. I just can't play for more than 5 seconds before it dies on me. I think the CTD is due to a driver/hardware issue.
I'm the primary admin on both computers. Kelley has admin privileges on her login though.

Oh, I thought that you had the same issue on your desktop and your laptop.
That is odd though that the game worked with a different account when you were both admins. I didn't think that the different privileges would really make a difference, I just figured that something had to be different between the two accounts to explain one working and the other not.
Grimholtt
2010-03-08, 06:58 PM
Exactly. What's even weirder is that I wiped the drive. Fresh install of Windows. Still had that problem on my login. But the moment I switched to hers, it installed perfectly. I have no explanation.
Her account would then have the same software as yours correct? And I would assume you tried grabbing 2008 visual c++?
This is a wildshot, but it could be a registry setting.
It's possible that it installed registry settings for you in a user specific setting, and when you logged into Kelley's account they got copied into a more global location.
It makes little sense and seems unprobable, but it's more than nothing :).

I did indeed try that. I tried many things. I tried borrowing a vcredist.exe that I knew had installed correctly and repackaging it as a .msi and substituting it for the vcredist.msi in the install directory. I tried to edit the installer script to bypass that step entirely. I tried completely removing the 2005 visual c++ and putting the 2008 and service pack in to see if that would help. It still tried to install the 2005 version and failed out. I lost track of all the ways I was trying to fix/repair/bypass the issue.

Yeah, at this point I have no idea. I'm just glad I got it working there. Unfortunately, I'm back on the road with the laptop which crashes constantly. I looked at the EA forums and I'm not alone. It seems to be predominantly laptops having this particular issue. I think it's a conflict with mobile hardware and drivers personally.

If you're having problems running a game and you think they're related to compatibility issues with Windows Vista, you can try to get the game to work by running it in Compatibility Mode. You can also check the Windows Vista Compatibility Center here.
Make sure you have downloaded all of the necessary updates to Windows Vista, including Service Pack 1.
Note: This setup should only be used for games that have been developed before Windows Vista. Please consult the Minimum System Requirements for your game to see if Windows Vista is listed before attempting to run your game in Compatibility Mode.
To run your game in Compatibility Mode:
Right-click the game's desktop shortcut icon and choose Properties.
In the Properties Panel, click the Compatibility tab.
Place a check in the Compatibility Mode checkbox.
Select Windows XP (Service Pack 2/3) in the mode box.
Click Apply to save your changes.
If you did not opt to have a desktop icon installed:
Find the game icon listed in your Games directory.
Right-click on the game and click on Customize. This will bring up the Customize menu.
Select Play.
Select Edit.
This will bring up the Properties screen. Click on the Compatibility tab.
Check Run in Compatibility Mode and then choose Windows XP (or whatever operating system the game was designed for).
Press Apply, and then press OK. You will be back at the customize menu.
Close the customize screen.
The game should now be configured to run in Compatibility Mode.
If you're playing multiple games, you will have to configure each game to run in Compatibility Mode separately.
You might also want to try running the software as an administrator by following the steps below:
Right-click the game's desktop shortcut icon and choose Properties.
In the Properties Panel, click the Compatibility tab.
In the Privilege Level section, place a check in the Run this Program as an Administrator checkbox.
Click Apply to save your changes.
Try the software again.
The Windows Vista Firewall is also more active than the Windows XP Firewall. This can cause problems playing online and running games that were designed before Vista. Turning off the Windows Vista firewall will not stop the firewall from blocking programs. To ensure that the game is running at peak performance, you need to add the game program and any related programs (for example, Punkbuster for some online titles) to the Firewall Exceptions list.
Sincerely,
Electronic Arts Customer Support

So my mouse has gotten "twitchy" for lack of a better word and I'm almost positive it coincided with the install of BC2.
It jitters a bit and actually seems to avoid the spot where you wanna click, both ingame and in windows. I've not changed anything mouse related, it is not accelerated. I have messed with sensitivity and mouse speed and nothing seems to help.
Any ideas?

Hello,
I'm sorry for any inconvenience this issue has caused.
When this issue occurs, do you receive any error messages or see any other unusual behavior from the computer?
The best recommendation I can make, at this time, would be to boot your computer in a clean boot mode. This will reduce the amount of system services and background tasks running on your computer and should increase the overall performance of the game.
For details about how to configure a clean boot, please visit the Microsoft support pages at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135.
When you disable the processes that run on your computer, please make sure to leave PnkbsterA and PnkbsterB active as the punk buster software will need these processes to run correctly and allow you to connect to online servers.
Please let me know if you continue to experience this issue.
Thank you.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. 3 days of waiting for some sort of mind altering upper level high tech fix, and this was the response. I'm underwhelmed.

I will say, I disabled my own realtek onboard sound device and installed a x-fi titanium and my sound crashing (looping audio until bsod or game crash) has gone away.
Hrm....
